Silent Paddling

11-year-old Evan Byrne, great-grandson of the recently departed Betty Olson, was assigned an essay in his Language Arts class. He was to write about a favorite quite place. He received very little help from his mother (present tense vs. past tense; punctation).

"It makes my heart so happy to know that he views his time and memories at the lake in the same way I always have," writes Evan's mom. "You (Susan) and Grandpa decided to buy the cottage all those years ago. Who knew it would turn out to be such an important part of our family's history and something to pass on to the generations? It is a legacy and we are so grateful to have it. Those precious memories are more about the family and the times we've had, rather than the actual place, but it would be different if we hadn't had a place to come to for all these years."
